“I shall not be surprised if this symphony is torn to pieces or little appreciated, for that will not be the first such case. But I absolutely believe it to be the best and, in particular, the sincerest of all my creations. I love it as I have never loved any other of my musical offspring.” Referring to the Pathétique as though it were a newborn child, Piotr Tchaikovsky made little effort to conceal his pride and satisfaction with his latest (and last) symphony in 1893.
