Following in a line of exceptional Russian composers such as Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s compositions are representative of late Russian Romanticism. In November 1906, Rachmaninoff moved his family to Dresden, which had a rich musical life and where he quickly began to put notes on paper. Still nursing scars from the fiasco that greeted the premiere of his First Symphony, Rachmaninoff almost lost heart when word leaked out that he was at work on a second.
