George Frideric Handel first appeared on the London scene in 1711, with his opera Rinaldo, the first Italian-language opera to be composed for the English stage. Over the next three decades, opera would become the darling of the nobility, then the scorn of intellectuals and pamphleteers, and finally an outcast. Handel’s own circumstances ebbed and flowed with the rise and fall of opera’s fortunes. By 1741, his last opera, Deidamia, failed and Handel was half-determined to return to his native Germany.
