Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers debut at Orchestra Hall

DETROIT, (Feb. 12, 2010) -One of the most diversified performers in the motion picture industry today, Steve Martin-actor, comedian, author, playwright, producer, and musician – comes to Orchestra Hall, teaming up with the Steep Canyon Rangers on April 19. The performance, titled Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, An Evening of Bluegrass and Banjo, will feature songs from Martin’s Grammy Award-winning banjo album, The Crow, and selections with the Steep Canyon Rangers. This one-night special event will take place on Mon., April 19 at 8 p.m.

Steve Martin has been successful as a writer of and performer in some of the most popular movies of recent film history. In March of 2010, Martin, along with Alec Baldwin, will co-host the 82nd Annual Academy Awards – his third time serving as host of the prestigious award show. On Jan. 31, 2010, Steve Martin’s banjo album, The Crow / New Songs For The Five-String Banjo, won a Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album. Martin has played roles in films such as It’s Complicated, The Pink Panther, Cheaper By the Dozen, and its sequel, along with Father of the Bride, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and his first feature film, co-writing and starring in The Jerk. Martin’s other films include classic comedies like Frank Oz’s Little Shop of Horrors, in which he played a demented dentist; John Hughes’ Planes, Trains and Automobiles, co-starring John Candy and the comic Western send-up The Three Amigos co-starring Martin Short and Chevy Chase .

 From Asheville, North Carolina, Steep Canyon Rangers has built a reputation as an engaging acoustic quintet seasoned by constant touring. Before being nominated for two International Bluegrass Music awards in 2008 the Rangers were named “Emerging Artist of the Year’ in 2006 at the IBMA awards ceremony in Nashville, TN.  The band’s willingness to bring Bluegrass to music-lovers worldwide has taken Steep Canyon Rangers to festivals in Sweden, Ireland, Germany and Canada. The group also regularly performs at venues on the U.S. jam-band circuit. Steep Canyon Rangers’ tour with Steve Martin has included performances at the 20th Annual International Bluegrass Music Awards Show, Carnegie Hall, the Ryman Auditorium, Royal Festival Hall in London, and has visited Los Angeles, Boston, Atlanta, Dallas, Charlotte, Washington, and Chicago.
